What is 16 Tech?
16 Tech is an Indianapolis innovation community built for the continuous flow of people, ideas and activity. It’s 60 acres of creative space – makerspace, co-working space and research and wet labs, generous greenspace and event space – that connects thinkers and doers and ignites innovation. With easy access to miles of trails connecting adjacent parks, neighborhoods and cultural districts, 16 Tech offers a new environment for driving global impact in health, technology, manufacturing and the arts.
Innovation communities are a reflection of a new economy where, according to the Brookings Institution, “innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and placemaking intersect.” Like many innovation communities, 16 Tech is located in a dense urban core. Unique to 16 Tech is its proximity to more than 65 percent of Central Indiana’s advanced industry sectors and research universities and hospitals.
16 Tech also supports nearby community efforts to attract jobs and create advantages for its residents.
16 Tech is the city’s common thread that brings its global industry and research assets, its growing entrepreneurial ecosystem and city residents together to spark collaboration and innovation.
More than 15 years ago, Central Indiana leaders identified the most promising advanced industry sectors that were primed to grow the region’s economy. Today, those industries – life sciences, tech and advanced engineering – have largely defined the region’s economic landscape. Hundreds of advanced industry startups as well as spinoffs and global corporations today call Indianapolis home.
16 Tech is a result of the unprecedented partnership of Central Indiana’s industry, philanthropic, university and civic partners. The following partner organizations have provided funding, resources, time and talent to the development of 16 Tech:
